Cecafa Nile Basin Cup Winners’ Cup launched
THE Regional football body Cecafa has announced a new club competition that will have winners of cup competitions in the region compete against each other for the title.
The magnitude of this year’s tournament is expected to be played between May 20 and June 5 in Sudan.
The Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye welcomed the new idea saying as a region they need as many competitions as possible to strengthen the Cecafa clubs and give them a competitive edge at the continental stage.
“Once this event gets off, we are of the opinion of launching Cecafa Champions League,” said Nicholas Musonye. Cecafa and host federation Sudan will cater for all the costs of travel and accommodation for all team.
Rwanda football federation, Ferwafa has been asked to nominate teams that won their Cup tournaments or finished runners up in their respective national leagues to compete in the tournament.
AS Kigali being Peace Cup holders AS Kigali will take part in the tournament but this will depend on their current engagements in this year’s Peace Cup campaign.
On Wednesday, Andre Casa Mbungo’s outfit defeated second division side Rwamagana 3-1 to set up a 1/8th round clash against Rayon Sports. The winner between the two teams will face APR in the quarter finals.
The tournament will have teams from the Cecafa region together with Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt also being offered the chance to nominate clubs to take part in the tournament.
