Uganda’s Victoria University lifts Cecafa Nile Basin Cup
Uganda’s Victoria University SC trounced Kenya’s AFC Leopards to win the inaugural Cecafa Nile Basin Cup tournament after a 2-1 win in the final played on Wednesday in Khartoum, Sudan.
Mutyaba Muzamir scored at the death of the game to power the Kampala-based club to their first ever international title. Muzamir scored in the 92nd minute killing the Kenyans hope of a comeback.
Earlier, Mathew Odongo had put the Ugandans into the lead on 29 minutes, before Austin Ikene drew parity on the stroke of half time.
In the third-place match, Ahly Shandy of Sudan came from a goal down to beat Academie Tchite of Burundi 4-1 to snatch bronze.
The champions went away with 30,000 US Dollars; 20,000 US Dollars for the runner-up and 10,000 US Dollars for the third-place team.
The inaugural tournament was targeted at winners of the knockout competition in the various National Associations that constitute Cecafa.
Other participating clubs were Mbeya City (Tanzania), Police (Zanzibar), Flambeau de l’Est (Burundi), Defence (Ethiopia), Malakia (South Sudan), Etincelles of Rwanda and Sudanese trio, Al Merrikh, Al Fashir and Hay Al-Arab.
