Cecafa Kagame Cup set for August
THE 2014 edition of the Cecafa Kagame club championship will be held in Rwanda from August 9 to 23, this year, according to Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye.
Musonye told a news conference on Thursday that after meeting Ferwafa and Ministry of Sports officials, they have come to an understanding for the tournament to take place in Kigali from August 9 to 23.
“I came here two days ago to ensure that we sit with Ferwafa and the Minister of Sports and Culture after seeking an appointment with him to confirm that Cecafa is ready and determined to ensure that we organize a good competition as we have always done before in Rwanda,”
“You recall the last time Kagame Cup was played in Rwanda layback in 2010 and the competition was a huge success. We want to surpass that by organizing a very good competition this year,”
Musonye also noted that twelve countries have confirmed their participation and four teams from Angola, DR Congo and Congo Brazzaville are on standby ready to be called upon to come and participate in this competition.
“I want to waylay the fear that we are ready to go with this competition and we shall get enough sponsorship to make sure that we organize a competition that we will all remember,”
He further noted that, “Kagame Cup is a brand in Africa and we can’t stage a competition that will not hit the benchmark. It’s a brand that we must maintain in the highest esteem and highest possible means to make sure that the brand remains what it is and what it has been,”
“Therefore, Rwanda is ready, Cecafa is ready and all our teams are ready to come for the competition. I want to assure you that we are going to have the biggest number of entrants in this competition,”
Once Cecafa and Ferwafa get a breakthrough with addition funds, the organizers expect to host 16-team competition, the biggest ever in the history of Cecafa.
He lauded the people of Rwanda for the support they have always given Cecafa to ensure that they organize good competitions.
President Paul Kagame has sponsored the regional club championship to a tune of US$60,000 annually since 2002.
