Cecafa set to introduce Champions League
While announcing plans for the forthcoming CecafaKagame Cup that runs from August 8-24 in the capital Kigali, General secretary Nicholas Musonye revealed that plans are under way to introduce a new tournament – Cecafa Club Champions League — that will see the region’s top clubs battle for honours.
He hopes the competition will follow the model of the UEFA Champions League.
“This is a long term plan, it cannot be implemented today or next year, we need at least two years. We have to put logistics in place. It also requires a lot of resources and structures that must be put in place. We also have to look for sponsorship,” Musonye said on Tuesday in Nairobi.
Cecafa already runs the Senior Challenge Cup, Kagame Cup and the recently launched Nile Basin tournament.
