AS Kigali stuns Rayon Sports to win Super Cup
2013 Super Cup, Sunday
Rayon Sports 0-1 AS Kigali
KIGALI CITY sponsored side AS Kigali stunned Primus league champions Rayon Sports to win the 2013 inaugural Super Cup title on Sunday at Stade de Kigali.
Striker Bodo Ndikumana scored the lone goal of the game with a sublime first-time finish off Jimmy Mbaraga’s effort, which gave an advantage to the Burundian-born player to shoot past Gerard Bikorimana in the far corner on the 30th minute.
With the absence of head coaches Cassa Mbungo (head coach) and Thomas Higiro (goalkeeper’s Coach), who are both currently on duty with the Junior Wasps preparing for the Francophone Games in Nice, France, assistant coach Jean de Dieu Mateso rose to the occasion to guide AS Kigali to their second trophy of the year after the Peace Cup title.
Skipper Fuadi Ndayisenga picked the ball up on the left flank and cut inside two defenders to unleash a venomous left-foot strike which was kept off bay by the impressive Emery Mvuyekure who denied the blues several clear chances.
Didier Gomes da Rosa’s Rayon Sport continued to dominate possession in the second half but efforts from Cedric Amissi, Ndayisenga, Djamal Mwiseneza were thwarted by an outstanding performance from Mvuyekure who pulled off a string of fine saves.
On the other hand, Eric Ndahayo, Muhamed Mushiyimana, Mohamoud Kabura proved pivotal for AS Kigali as they kept Rayon Sports’ midfielder busy.
With Rayon Sports being deprived of striker Salita Kambale, his substitute Jean Paul Havugarurema failed to make any impression as good defending from Latifa Bishira and James Tubane paid off for AS Kigali to climax the normal time standing firm on their earlier secured win.
The match, the first of its kind in Rwanda, was sponsored by Turkish construction company Babil Group of Companies (Babilaks Construction Limited).
AS Kigali who will play in next year’s Africa Confederation Cup walked away walked with Rwf5m while Rayon Sports took home Rwf2m.
