DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Rayon Sports face traditional rivals APR in the country’s biggest rivalry derby of the year this afternoon in the Turbo King Football League.
It is only 7000 fans who will be allowed to watch the match considering the little capacity of Kigali Regional Stadium.
Expectant are the coaches, players and fans. Of course the stadium will be filled to capacity with vuvuzelas doing much of the talking that a player may not hear what his teammate is saying to him.
Deploying sign language will be the way to go for everyone involved including and especially the coaches. This much-awaited game is not just about three points, if anything it is about bragging rights.
Hosts, Rayon Sports go into today’s match with a lot of task at hand. The Nyanza-based club must not settle for less than a win in today’s clash or else they will lose retaining the league title to rivals APR who are ahead with three points.
APR, 13-time league champions lead the standings with 49 points, three adrift of Rayon Sports. Having won the first leg 1-0 with both clubs under different coaches, everyone will be eager to see who reigns between APR’s Vincent Mashami and Rayon Sport’s Belgian Luc Eymael.
Luc said on Friday, “This is a tough and an important match to us, fans and the club in general. We have prepared it in the best possible way,”
“I respect APR just like any other club and it’s going to be a big match with a lot of intensity. It’s important because we need a win to remain in contention for the league and if we lose, it’s going to be tough for us to make a comeback,” added former AFC Leopards tactician.
Rayon Sports will miss the services of injured players namely; Aphrodis Hategikimana, Faustin Usengimana, Papy Kamanzi and upcoming defender Alype Majyambere.
Since 1995, Rayon Sports and APR have created a bitter rivalry with the later going on to win a record 13 league titles compared to seven for the former during that period.
APR interim coach Vincent Mashami said that the 13-times Rwandan champions, seeking a record extending 14th league title are primed for the tie.
“We are 100% ready for the contest. We are facing a tough opponent which we respect but we don’t fear them at all,”
“I have good individual players are very motivated and willing to do what it takes to bag maximum points so it’s going to be a do-or-die affair,” added Mashami.
Besides injured midfielder Jean Claude Iranzi, APR players are determined to extend their leadership at the helm of the league standings with a win at Rayon Sports.
In the first leg, APR defeated Rayon Sports 1-0 at Amahoro stadium courtesy of Charles Tibingana and have since gone to register 14 more wins, drawn four and lost only once out of the 20 matches played this season.
Rayon Sports have won 15 matches, drawn once and lost four matches respectively but they hold the best goal scoring record as their lead strikers Cedric Amissi, Meddie Kagere and Fuadi Ndayisenga have scored a combined 25 goals out of the 42 goals scored by the club this season.
In March, 2013, after years of dominance, the Nyanza-based Rayon handed the army side one of their heaviest defeats in recent years as they succumbed to a 4-0 loss in March this year.
In 2002, Rayon Sports beat APR 4-1 at Amahoro, but they have since struggled to beat their rivals in the last six years or so. However, after that famous result last season, the Blues would be feeling confident hoping to register another incredible result going into today’s game.
One match is lined up on Saturday as Etincelles hosts Gicumbi at Umuganda stadium. Etincelles are ranked eighth with 21 points while Gicumbi are fighting against dropping in the relegation zone. Jean Baptista Kayiranga’s sides lie 12th with 16 points.
On Sunday, Amagaju will host Espoir in Nyamagabe. Coach Godfrey Okoko’s side is fighting to get out of the drop zone against a strong Emmanuel Ruremesha’s outfit which is placed fifth with 35 points.
Seventh ranked Musanze with 33 points hosts tenth-placed side Marines in Musanze ; eleventh AS Muhanga take on Gilbert Kanyankole’s outfit who sit sixth with 34 points while Sam Ssimbwa’s Police who have a torrid season face another struggling side Mukura at Kicukiro turf.
