Uganda Cranes is on the verge of winning their 13th Cecafa Challenge Cup title if they beat off stiff challenge from Kenya’s Harambee Stars in this evening’s nail-biting display final due at Namboole stadium.
The Cranes sailed to the finals after thrashing Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars 3-0 courtesy of Emmanuel Okwi and a double from Robert Ssentongo.
Kenya also defeated Zanzibar 4-2 in penalties to qualify for the finals after the match had ended 2-2 in regulations time with Kenya twice coming from behind to cancel the Zanzibar Heroes lead.
“Our opponents Kenya are a very good side but I believe we can retain our title as long as we maintain the same discipline tactically and technical as things look positive for us,” Coach Bobby Williamson told supersport.com.
Today’s decider will be a repeat of the 2008 final when Uganda beat their arch rivals 1-0.
In an earlier game, Tanzania and Zanzibar clash in a titanic battle for the third play-off.
Cecafa through their sponsor Tusker has staked $30,000, $20,000 and $10,000 as well as a yet to be known award for the tournament’s best player.
The tournament’s best player accolade might be given to one of the best three lead top scorers namely; Mrisho Alfan Ngassa [5 goals], John Raphael Bocco. [5 goals] and Robert Ssentongo [3 goals]
