Sekagya voted Footballer of the Year

Ibrahim Sekagya

Red Bull Salzburg defender Ibrahim Sekagya has been named Uganda’s Footballer of the Year 2012 by the country’s Sports Press Association, Uspa, on Monday.

The former Cranes captain beat off challenges from URA striker Robert Ssentongo, Gor Mahia’s Daniel Sserunkuma and Vipers defender Godfrey Walusimbi.

The sports scribes were voting at their monthly assembly in Kampala just under two weeks before their annual gala where the sports personality and team of the year will be announced.

Uganda Cranes were also selected as the month of December’s best performers at the same meet following their 2012 Tusker Cecafa Cup triumph.

Sekagya, who retired from the national team last February, was recognized for his role in Salzburg charge to the Australian league title and their FA Cup.

Ssentongo was top scorer in the Bell Super League last season with 13 goals and also won the golden boot at last month’s Cecafa Tusker Cup, which Uganda won.

Sserunkuma was the runner-up goalscorer in the Kenyan Premier League with 17 goals while Walusimbi was instrumental in Cranes failed Nations Cup campaign and in the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Senegal, where his late penalty secured Uganda a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, Bobby Williamson’s team, the Cranes, were recognized for lifting last year’s Tusker Cecafa Cup in Kampala for a record breaking 13th time.

The Cranes beat off opposition from the Girls’ Cricket U-19 team, who won the ICC Africa tournament, polling 355 points, 10 ahead of the cricket team. The Cranes, who beat Kenya 2-1 in the Cecafa finals, will be crowned this Friday.
