Okwi sends Uganda into last eight
Skipper Emmanuel Okwi netted a brace for Uganda to beat Eritrea 3-0 in a Group C tie at the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Nairobi, Kenya.
The win was enough to send the defending champions to the last eight, where they join Sudan who had earlier beaten Rwanda 1-0 at the same City Stadium.
Kenya-based striker Daniel Sserunkuma had a hand in all the three goals. He provided two neat passes for Okwi to score in the 10th and 39th minutes, before being brought down in the box in the 19th minute for Hamis Kizza to convert the penalty.
Muner Ahmed and Serak Beyene also got clear chances to score for Eritrea, but failed to find the target in each half.
The loss means Eritrea are also virtually out of the tournament after falling by the same margin in the first game against Sudan.
“We are happy to keep improving as we play more games in the tournament,” said Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic after the match.
The Cranes will now wait to face Sudan on Thursday in the last group game.
The two teams share the same number of points and goal difference and will be fighting to see who leads the group.
Action continues on Tuesday with two matches to be played in the town of Nakuru. Ethiopia will be up against South Sudan, while hosts Kenya battle Zanzibar.
