Okwi happy to rejoin Vodacom Premier League
Uganda Cranes striker Emmanuel Okwi is happy to be back in the Vodacom Premier League following his recent move to Dar es Salaam Young Africans (Yanga).
Okwi joined the Premier League champions Yanga almost two weeks ago and featured in a friendly match where he scored the only goal in his new team’s 3-1 defeat to arch-rivals Simba SC at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on December 21.
“I am very happy to return to the competitive Tanzanian Premier League and hopefully I can work hard and attract attention of top teams around the world,” Okwi told MTNFootball.com.
And Okwi’s transfer to Yanga did not amuse arch-rivals Simba where the striker played until early last year before switching to Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia.
Okwi abandoned the Tunisian giants for what he called failure to honour their contractual obligations and he returned home on a two-month stint at SC Villa in the FUFA Super League.
“I am sure playing in Tanzania and in the 2014 CAF Champions League will also help me get more exposure and improve my football,” said Okwi, who added that playing alongside compatriot Hamis Kiiza at the Jangwani club will be a great experience.
Meanwhile, Yanga vice chairperson Clement Sanga said they are happy to sign the Ugandan top striker because he is a tried and tested player who played a great role in Simba’s 5-0 win over them last season.
“The five goals we conceded last season were very painful and Okwi was involved in them. He scored a brace and made assists. He was a thorn in our defence and he troubled us very much. So we decided to sign him,” he said.
