Barkley named in youthful England squad

Ross Barkley has been included in the 23-man England squad for the World Cup, with Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley named only on the stand-by list.

After it was revealed late on Sunday that Roy Hodgson had left out Ashley Cole, Luke Shaw makes the squad as understudy to Leighton Baines at left-back.

Shaw’s Southampton team-mates Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert also make the squad – Lambert’s inclusion alongside Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge means that Andy Carroll and Jermain Defoe are on the stand-by list.

Also on the stand-by list is John Stones of Everton, who was playing for Championship side Barnsley last season, but, having made a £3 million switch to Goodison in January 2013, the 19-year-old came to prominence as he deputised for the injured Phil Jagielka towards the end of the 2013-14 Premier League campaign.

Frank Lampard makes the grade in midfield alongside Liverpool players Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling; while, having made his return to first team action against Norwich on Sunday, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is also included.

“Lampard is a very important part of our set-up. He has been captain of the team on many occasions, he has been the vice-captain to Steven Gerrard, he still plays an important role for his club side despite not being as young as other players,” said manager Hodgson.

Carrick rejected the chance to be on the stand-by list for Euro 2012, but he has accepted the same position this time around; club team-mate Cleverley has not made the 23 despite starting nine consecutive games under Hodgson at the start of the 2012-13 season.

“I hope the squad will give a very good account of themselves in Brazil and not let the country down in any way,” said Hodgson.

“Phil Jones still poses a question. He had his shoulder injury a week ago today – everything points towards the fact it’s a three-week injury but we can’t guarantee that, so I will be taking Stones who will be Jones’ replacement if Jones is not fit,” added the former Fulham manager.

“There are some youngsters in there, but I am not taking anyone purely for the experience, unless you take Stones and Flanagan who are on the standby list.”
