Kagame urges fans to support APR in champions League
The APR club chairman Maj. Gen. Alex Kagame is urging home fans to provide support when the military side host visiting Vital’o of Burundi in the first leg match of the Caf Champions league which will be staged at Amahoro stadium on Saturday.
Gen. Kagame said on Wednesday, “We are requesting Rwandans to turn out in huge numbers during the match to encourage our young boys such that they can post a victory in the upcoming match,”
The call has been made in an attempt to avoid any act of demoralizing the home side as fans have in the past extended their domestic rivalry into international matches.
It has not happened nor once neither twice home teams are booed by rival fans and cheer the visitors.
Most of the visiting teams have found a safe sanctuary in Rwanda whenever APR plays their international matches whether competitive or friendly.
APR is well geared for the upcoming continental match after CAF released all the playing licenses ahead of the tie. APR, third on the Primus league table with 32 points in 17 matches is eager and motivated to post a home victory.
Last year, APR, under coach Ernie Brandts, managed to reach the second round of the Orange Champions League, falling to Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel who ejected the Rwandan side 3-2 on goal aggregates.
In the first round, APR beat Kenya’s Tusker 1- 0 on aggregate. The two teams settled for a barren draw in Nairobi but the military side scored in the second half of the return leg in Kigali to crash Tusker’s hopes of a second round appearance.
They ejected Kenya’s Tusker FC 1-0 on goal aggregates in the preliminary round.
In the event of qualification to the next round, APR will come up against Rangers of Nigeria and SC Do Principe of Sao Tome and Principe.
