Defender Alaba extends Bayern deal to 2018
Bayern Munich’s Austrian defender David Alaba has agreed a deal to extend his contract with the European champions until 2018, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday.
The 21-year-old international left-back joined Bayern at the age of 16 and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the European game.
“He is one of the best and most talented defenders in Europe and we’re delighted to continue working with him,” read a club statement from president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Alaba has been a regular at left-back for Bayern and played a key role in their historic treble-winning 2012-13 season in which they won the Champions League, Bundesliga and the German Cup.
Alaba, who was born in Vienna to a Nigerian father and Filipino mother, has scored twice in five Champions League matches this season as well as notching one goal in 13 league games.
Meanwhile, ahead of January’s Ballon D’Or award the world’s two best players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo shared the spoils in the Spanish League’s season awards on Monday.
Messi was named “best player” for 2012/13 while Ronaldo won the “MVP” or player of the season award.
Both players are on the FIFA Ballon D’Or shortlist for the best player of 2013.
