AS KIGALI booked a place in the first round against Alhy Shandy of Sudan after beating Burundian Academie Tchite side 2-1 on aggregate after a 1-all draw in the Africa Champions league match played at Prince Louis Rwagasore stadium on Sunday.
Enjoying a slim 1-0 goal advantage from the first leg, the Peace Cup champions needed a draw to make it to the second round.
The script seemed to favor the visitors who piled pressure in the opening half only to end up missing the goal. Jimmy Mbaraga and Bodo Ndikumana wasted several chances that would have killed off the game early.
At the start of the second half, Pacifier Nduwimana scored the opening goal for the hosts, coming off a free kick in the 55th minute.
AS Kigali continued to fluff many chances but on the 71st minute mark, striker Jimmy Mbaraga made amends when scored the all-important away goal.
With pressure eased, AS Kigali left their hosts labor hard with no success as the tight defense neutralized everything thrown at them.
Elsewhere, Tanzania’s Azam were knocked out 1-2 on aggregates after losing 2-0 to hosts Ferroviario de Beira of Mozambique yesterday.
In Nairobi, AFC Leopards qualified 4-1 on aggregates after a 2-1 win over Defence of Ethiopia while CS Don Bosco of DR Congo reached the next round 3-1 on aggregates despite losing 1-0 to hosts Victoria University of Uganda in Kampala.
