Rayon-APR return league tie pushed forward
SECURITY concerns have forced the return league game between archrivals Rayon Sports and APR to be pushed to a yet-to-be-known date according to Rwanda Football Federation, Ferwafa.
According to a statement from Ferwafa, the match which was due this Sunday at Stade de Kigali has been pushed because of the stadium’s incapability to host massive fans which both sides boast.
Ferwafa chairman Vincent Degaule Nzamwita said on Tuesday, “After meeting officials from Rayon Sports, APR and the National Police, we have found it suitable to postpone this game because of security concerns,”
“They are fears from security organs who believe that they can’t guarante security of fans between the two teams if the match goes on to be held at this small stadium,”
“We have found it more appropriate to have this fixture postponed to another date which will be communicated and the venue will be played at Amahoro stadium because of its capability to host many fans,” added Nzamwita.
Amahoro stadium hosts over 25,000 fans contrary to Stade de Kigali which can accomodate maximum 12,000 fans.
However, Rayon Sports were left disgruntled by the decision. The blues who have financial constraints wanted the match to be held as it was earlier planned and even gave another option for the match to be held at Stade Muhanga but their plea was ignored.
The management of the Nyanza-based club hoped to use the match to gain finances to pay salaries of their players who according to reports are yet to received their February salaries.
The club is worried that they might lose some of their players due to financial challenges as the league is set to be put on hold to pave way for the 20th commemoration of 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi until April 19.
The previous match which pitted the two rival sides in November last year, APR beat Rayon Sports 1-0 at Amahoro stadium courtesy of Charles Bayingana’s strike.
With 20 matches played this season, APR leads the Turbo King league standins with 49 points, three ahead of Rayon Sports.
