Emotional Pienaar thanks Cavin
An emotional Steven Pienaar has paid tribute to the current SuperSport United coach, Cavin Johnson, for the role he played in his development on and off the field.
The former Bafana Bafana skipper was talking during the Barclays Premier League’s You Are Football campaign, which aims to celebrate those who dedicate their lives to saving football.
“I would like to thank coach Cavin Johnson for all the effort he put in,” said Pienaar.
“When I was a kid, I always had a dream to play in the Barclays Premier League, but without Johnson I don’t think I would have reached my full potential. Because Cavin grew up in Westbury as well it was easier to communicate and also develop me as not only as a footballer but as young person as well,” added the former Bafana captain.’
Johnson discovered an immensely talented Pienaar when he was just 12 years old on the outskirts of Johannesburg, in a town called Westbury, which is famous for a high crime rate. He then offered him an opportunity at the Transnet School of Excellence where he nurtured and developed him into the professional footballer that he is today.
“We both helped each other grow,” said Johnson.
“I am very proud of you (Pienaar). I am very proud that you have become a superstar,” added Cavin.
Pienaar has played for several top European sides namely Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham Hotspur and is currently with the Everton.
