Flying Eagles thump Tanzania
Nigeria’s Under-20 football team, the Flying Eagles have got one final hurdle to navigate before reaching the 2015 African Under-20 championships.
The Flying Eagles produced an attacking masterclass to dismiss Tanzania’s under-20s 4-1 on Saturday in a second leg, second round qualifying game decided at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
A 2-0 first leg win recorded by the Nigerians two weeks previously in Dar es Salaam meant they progressed to the third round of qualifying on a 6-1 aggregate score.
They will now face the winners of the second round match between Lesotho and Angola in August to determine which side will qualify for the Under-20 championship.
Saturday’s game looked like it would be a procession as Nigeria took the lead after just seven minutes through Alhassan “Muazam” Ibrahim whose low shot beat goalkeeper Hamad Joma.
However, Tanzania drew level after 17 minutes, when Banda Hassan curled a free kick from outside the box beyond Flying Eagles goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo.
Musa Yahaya put Nigeria in front again in the 34th minute moments after Taiwo Awoniyi missed an easy chance.
Two minutes later, Awoniyi made up for his several misses with a third goal for the Flying Eagles, who continued to control proceedings.
“Mu-azam” would have made it 4-1 three minutes to half time but he chose to go for glory rather than square for an unmarked teammate.
Substitute Chidera Eze made the game safe for the Flying Eagles in the 69th minute with the fourth goal.
But just two minutes later, Enaholo pulled off a big save when he tipped for a corner a goal-bound shot.
Kelechi Iheanacho, Bernard Bulbwa and Abdullahi Alfa all had openings to increase the tally but poor finishing denied them.
