Yanga Fc of Tanzania retained the 2012 Cecafa/Kagame Cup title after defeating Azam 2-0 in the final played on Saturday in Dar es salaam.
Ugandan international Diego Hamis Kiza scored the opener on 44th minute before Said Bahanuz put the icing on the cake scoring a 90th minute cracker to earn Yanga their fifth Cecafa club championship title.
Bahanuz and Dady Birori finished the tournament as joint top-scorers with six goals each.
Rwanda’s representatives APR ended their campaign on a sad note losing the third place contest to DR Congo’s AS Vita after a 1-2 loss.
Magola Mapanda snatched the lead on 18th minute shooting from close range to beat goalie Jean Luc Ndayishimiye.
APR tried to press for an equaliser but their efforts through Olivier Karekezi, Jean Baptista Mugiraneza and Dan Wagaluka were all off target.
Mutumbo Kazadi scored the winner after meeting Dady Birori’s cross in a counter attack action which Ndayishimiye could not halt.
Jean baptista Mugiraneza snatched the consolation goal off Hegman Ngoma’s attempt on 88th minute but this was not enough to help them win the game.
Coach Ernie Brandts said, “My boys gave their best and we were just unlucky. I congratulate my boys for the work done.”
When asked about his future, the Dutchman said, “I really don’t know but i will have to know about my future with APR Fc when i return back to Kigali on Monday”.
Yanga who have won the title for a fifth time pocketed $30,000; first runners-up Azam were consoled with $20,000 and AS Vita settled for $10,000 as cash prizes all courtesy of President Paul Kagame who has been sponsoring the tournament since 2001.
