U-17 LOSE IN FIRST FRIENDLY
As the Rwanda U-17continues with their preparations ahead of Nigeria clash on 31st August and 2nd September 2012, the team played their first friendly match, losing 3-1 to La Jeunesse at Amahoro stadium. Other upcoming friendly matches for the boys include the Wednesday fixture in which they will play against Kiyovu SC reserve team before playing AS Kigali on Saturday. They will then fly to Calabar Nigeria where they will play the Nigeria U-17 on 31st August and September 2nd 2012.
The series of friendly matches were organized by head coach Richard Tardy as they prepare to take on either Botswana or Mali in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in October, with the winner going into the next round to meet either Sudan/Somali or Algeria. And ahead of the busy schedule, Tardy said, “We want to do everything possible so that we reach the finals of the competition which will take place in Morocco. That is why we started preparing early enough so that we perfect our game.”
The country’s U-17 played in the finals of the World Cup in 2011 in Mexico, but never made it past the group stage. In Africa, Rwanda reached the final, losing unfairly to ten-men Burkina Faso by 2-1. The team is currently training at FERWAFA ground and residing at Hilltop Hotel.
