South Africa shift focus to Chan 2014
THE curtains of the 2013 Orange Nations Cup are still raised with a potential finale still rumbling in the pipeline.
But that has not stopped hosts South Africa from launching plans that will turn the 2014 Africa Nations Championship into a major success.
According to the Local organizing committee (LOC), the tournament’s host cities Polokwane, (Peter Mokaba Stadium), Kimberly (GWK Stadium), Bloemfontein (Vodacom Park) and the Cape Town Stadium have declared their readiness to host the tournament that is an animation of the Africa Cup of Nations but legible for players that compete in domestic football leagues.
A countdown to the championship will officially be launched by South Africa President Jacob Zuma minutes after the Nations Cup final on Sunday after which all five host cities will kick-start campaigns that will be geared towards publicizing the event.
All the Amavubi team has to do is overcome Ethiopia over two legs to guarantee a place in the championship that already promises to be a major success.
The Amavubi reached the final tournament in 2011 but lost all the group stage matches thus failing to reach the quarter finals.
Amavubi will make the first trip to Addis Ababa for the first leg on June 23 before the return on July 6 in Kigali.
DR Congo won the inaugural championship while Tunisia are the defending champions.
South Africa will continue to ride on the legacy left behind by the 2010 World Cup and 2013 Nations Cup –two major events that have defied all that had predicted failure on an epic scale in the country.
