Defending champion APR booked a place in the round of 16 after easily overcoming 10-man second division side Sunrise at Stade de Kigali yesterday in preliminary round of the annual Peace Cup knockout competition.
The military side were in the lead as early as 20 minutes as Jean Claude Iranzi converted a well taken penalty.
Fifteen minutes later, striker Barnabe Mubumbyi scored a header to earn APR two goals before recess.
The lead was extended by entertaining midfielder Maxime Sekamana and Hegman Ngoma who completed the rout in style with superb goals.
The military side who launched a bright start to the 18th edition of the lucrative competition will have to know their opponent in the next round after the preliminary round action which ends on Sunday.
It was not good news for last year’s runner-ups Police FC as they got knocked out of the competition by AS Muhanga 3-1 on penalties at Mumena grounds after a goalless draw in normal ninety minutes. Meddie Kagere squared several chances that would have helped the Cops side win the game earlier and he even went on to miss the penalty.
Ernest Kwizera also missed the penalty but Innocent Nshimiyimana converted the lone penalty which was not enough to help them get through.
La Jeunesse was also ejected out of the competition by a second division side Pepiniere after a 5-3 shootout at Kicukiro turf.
Elsewhere on Saturday, AS Kigali beat Etoile de l’est 4-2 at Rwamagana; Mukura hammered second division side Gasabo 5-1 in Muhanga; Unity beat fellow league side Intare 5-0 at Muhanga; Bugesera also booked a place in the last 16 with a 2-0 win over Esperance in Kicukiro while Vision JN lost to Kirehe 2-3 respectively.
