National champions APR became the second side to be eliminated in the Africa club championship by another Burundian club in the preliminary round in a space of 24 hours.
Despite beating Vital’o 1-0 in the return leg on Sunday at Prince Louis Rwagasore stadium in Bujumbura, APR were eliminated from this year’s Champions League.
APR who needed a 2-0 victory dominated the game and scored the lone goal of the game from Barnabe Mubumbyi on 75th minute but it was not enough to grant them qualification.
Instead Vital’o who had won the first leg 2-1 secured qualification on the away goal rule to book a place in the first round.
The exit follows another disappointing elimination by Police FC who drew 1-1 against LLB Academic of Burundi to lose 1-2 on goal aggregates.
This is the first time in the history of Rwandan football that Rwandan clubs had faced elimination in the preliminary round by any regional club in recent years.
